MORTON'S NEUROMA

Morton's neuroma is an entrapment of an interdigital nerve that results in swelling and scarring of the digital nerve. This painful condition commonly affects the nerve situated between the third and fourth toes. They are characterised by a sharp, lancinating type pain, usually when the patient is wearing shoes. Over a period of time, the nerve enlarges and the frequency and severity of pain and discomfort will increase.

The first line of defence for this condition is good supporting shoes which have a wide toe box and a low heel. When pain occurs it can be alleviated by removing the shoes and applying digital pressure to the painful area on the sole of the foot. Cold ice-pack compresses can be useful in reducing any swelling. Other useful treatments for Morton's neuroma are items such as metatarsal supports (ball of the foot), reusable gel pads/insoles and adhesive paddings as well as orthotic insoles.

If the condition persists, professional treatment by a HPC Registered Chiropodist / Podiatrist is recommended. They will be able to give you advice and can offer many treatments for this condition. For the long term treatment of this condition, and should conservative measures fail, then surgical excision can be required. Usually this surgery can be done on an out-patient basis. The recovery time for this procedure is usually less than three weeks and return to normal shoe gear is very rapid.

In conjunction to these treatments, heat mouldable foot bed orthotics can be used to treat this condition. They are designed to spread the load more evenly, distributing the bodies weight over the ball of the foot and along the arch.
